The expression “8 ÷ 2(2 + 2)” appears straightforward at first glance, but the moment people start solving it, the arguments begin. Some confidently arrive at one answer, while others insist the correct solution is completely different.
The confusion starts with the order of operations. Most people remember the basic rule: solve parentheses first, then multiplication and division from left to right. Following that approach, the expression inside the parentheses becomes 4, leaving the problem as “8 ÷ 2 × 4.” Since division and multiplication have equal priority, the calculation proceeds from left to right.
Using that method, 8 ÷ 2 equals 4. Then 4 × 4 equals 16. Many mathematicians and calculators follow this convention, leading them to conclude that the answer is 16.
