The Math Problem Dividing The Internet

A simple-looking math problem has once again sparked a heated debate online, leaving thousands of people convinced that their answer is the only correct one. The expression “8 ÷ 2(2 + 2)” appears straightforward at first glance, but the moment people start solving it, the arguments begin. Some confidently arrive at one answer, while others insist the correct solution is completely different.

The confusion starts with the order of operations. Most people remember the basic rule: solve parentheses first, then multiplication and division from left to right. Following that approach, the expression inside the parentheses becomes 4, leaving the problem as “8 ÷ 2 × 4.” Since division and multiplication have equal priority, the calculation proceeds from left to right.

Using that method, 8 ÷ 2 equals 4. Then 4 × 4 equals 16. Many mathematicians and calculators follow this convention, leading them to conclude that the answer is 16. Supporters of this result argue that the rules are clear and that there is no reason to treat the multiplication beside the parentheses differently from any other multiplication.

However, others believe the expression should be interpreted as 8 ÷ [2(4)], effectively grouping the multiplication together before performing the division. Following that interpretation, 2 × 4 becomes 8, and then 8 ÷ 8 equals 1. This alternative reading is what fuels the endless arguments whenever the problem resurfaces online.

In modern mathematical notation, most experts agree that the expression is poorly written because it allows for ambiguity. To avoid confusion, clearer parentheses would normally be used. Nevertheless, using the standard order of operations taught today, the answer is generally accepted as 16. And that is exactly why this simple equation continues to start debates every time it appears.
