Michael and Sarah had been driving through Louisiana for nearly three hours when a simple disagreement somehow turned into a full debate. As they approached Natchitoches, they both became convinced they knew exactly how the town’s name should be pronounced. Michael said it one way, Sarah insisted he was completely wrong, and before long they were going back and forth without either wanting to give up.

The discussion continued mile after mile. Every road sign they passed somehow added fuel to the argument. Michael kept repeating the name confidently while Sarah rolled her eyes and insisted she had heard it correctly before. Eventually they became so determined to prove who was right that neither wanted to change the subject.

A little while later, hunger finally interrupted the debate. They pulled into a small restaurant and sat down still arguing quietly with each other. Even while looking at the menu, they kept returning to the same question. Finally Michael smiled and said, “Let’s settle this right now.”

When the waitress came over, Michael leaned toward her and politely asked, “Before we order, could you help us with something? Can you slowly pronounce where we are right now?” Sarah crossed her arms and smiled confidently, already expecting victory.

The waitress leaned over the counter, smiled at both of them, and slowly said, “Bur…ger…King.” For a moment they stared at her in complete silence before bursting into laughter.
