Doctors Warn: The Shocking Consequences of Sleeping with M…

Dermatologists are sounding the alarm after photos like this began circulating online — showing what can happen when makeup and bacteria build up on the skin night after night. Experts explain that failing to remove makeup before bed can clog pores, trap oil and dirt, and create the perfect environment for severe skin infections and allergic reactions.

“When you sleep, your skin regenerates,” said Dr. Emily Rhodes, a dermatologist with over 20 years of experience. “Leaving layers of makeup on prevents that process, blocking oxygen flow and leading to inflammation, breakouts, and even long-term damage to your skin barrier.”

In some cases, trapped bacteria can trigger cystic acne or dermatitis, as well as infections that require medical treatment. Dermatologists strongly recommend using a gentle cleanser every night — even if you didn’t wear much makeup — followed by a moisturizer to protect and repair the skin.

Health experts also remind everyone that pillowcases can harbor bacteria from leftover makeup, which worsens the problem over time. Regularly washing pillowcases and maintaining a nightly skincare routine can help prevent these painful and avoidable skin conditions.

Moral of the story: no matter how tired you are, always remove your makeup before bed — your skin will thank you.
