Doctors Warn: The 5 Things You Should Never Do Before Bed to Avoid a Sleep Stroke

Every year, thousands of people suffer from strokes while sleeping, and most have no idea they were at risk. Experts now say that certain bedtime habits can silently trigger these life-threatening episodes — even in people who seem healthy.

Here are the 5 “Don’ts” before bed that could help you stay safe at any age:

  1. Don’t go to bed right after eating.
Lying down immediately after a heavy meal can increase blood pressure and disrupt circulation. Always wait at least 1.5 to 2 hours before lying flat after eating.
  2. Don’t drink alcohol or smoke late at night.
Both can narrow blood vessels and raise the risk of clots forming while you sleep. Nicotine and alcohol also cause dehydration, which thickens the blood.
  3. Don’t take hot showers right before bed.
While they feel relaxing, sudden temperature changes can cause blood pressure fluctuations. Instead, shower earlier in the evening and let your body cool down naturally.
  4. Don’t sleep immediately after emotional stress.
Going to bed upset or anxious keeps your body’s stress hormones high — and that’s when blood pressure spikes are most dangerous. Try deep breathing or meditation first.
  5. Don’t sleep flat if you feel dizzy or heavy-headed.
Elevate your head slightly if you notice any unusual pressure or tingling. These could be early signs of circulation issues that need checking.

Doctors say prevention starts with small habits — and that most nighttime strokes can be avoided with these simple lifestyle changes. Your body gives you warning signs — don’t ignore them
