Target Announces Closure of Multiple Stores Across the U.S. — Here Are the Affected Locations

In a shocking move that’s left shoppers and employees stunned, Target has officially announced the closure of several stores across the United States, citing rising theft and safety concerns as the primary reason. The decision, the company says, was made after months of evaluation and increasing challenges with organized retail crime.

According to Target’s statement, the following stores are set to close their doors permanently:

  • New York City, NY (Harlem)
  • Seattle, WA (University Way)
  • San Francisco, CA (Folsom Street and Geary Street)
  • Oakland, CA (Broadway)
  • Portland, OR (Galleria and Southeast Powell)
  • Pittsburgh, PA (East Liberty)

The closures are scheduled for November 21, and while many employees will be offered transfers to nearby locations, thousands of shoppers in these areas will lose access to one of their main neighborhood retailers.

Target officials stated that despite investments in store security and anti-theft technology, incidents of organized theft rings and staff safety concerns made it impossible to continue operations at these locations.

“This was not a decision we made lightly,” the company said in its announcement. “We simply cannot operate stores where theft and safety issues put our team and guests at risk.”

The closures have sparked strong reactions online, with customers expressing disappointment and fear that this may mark the beginning of more shutdowns in other major cities.

As of now, Target has not announced additional closures, but insiders suggest that the company may continue to evaluate other high-risk locations in the coming months.

It’s a turning point for one of America’s biggest retailers — and a warning about how retail theft and safety challenges are reshaping the shopping landscape across the country.
