She Had No Idea She Was the One Being Tricked

I couldn’t sleep that night, my mom’s shattered crystal set replaying in my mind. It felt like she’d killed the last piece of my mother I had left. But when I called my Aunt Marlene, she dropped a bombshell that flipped everything upside down.

“Honey,” she said, her voice calm but firm, “what Sandra broke… wasn’t the real set.”

I was stunned. My heart skipped a beat.

Aunt Marlene explained that after my mom passed, she had secretly made a duplicate set from glass that looked nearly identical. She knew Sandra’s bitterness and pettiness might one day lead her to “accidentally” destroy the one thing that mattered most to me. So she swapped the sets years ago.

“The real crystal set,” Aunt Marlene whispered, “has been in my attic all this time, waiting for your wedding day. Safe. Untouched.”

I felt tears streaming down my face—this time not from grief, but from relief. Sandra thought she had finally gotten the last word, that she had erased my mom from my wedding. But in reality? She had only destroyed a cheap copy.

On the day of my wedding, as I set the table with the true shimmering crystal that my mom once held, I felt her presence more strongly than ever. Every piece sparkled under the lights, untouched by spite and safe from Sandra’s hands.

Sandra never knew the truth. She thought she had “won.” But standing there with my mother’s real crystal set gleaming in front of me, I realized—she had only played herself.
