What it actually means..

Most people overlook subtle changes in their fingernails—but experts say your nails can reveal a lot about your health. One such sign that shouldn’t be ignored? Vertical or horizontal stripes on your nails.

While some nail ridges are harmless, others can be your body’s early warning signal.

1. Vertical Ridges (running from cuticle to tip)

These are the most common and usually related to aging. Just like wrinkles on the skin, vertical ridges often become more visible over time. However, if they appear suddenly or come with changes in nail color or texture, they might indicate nutritional deficiencies, especially in iron, magnesium, or Vitamin B12.

2. Horizontal Ridges (also called Beau’s lines)

These are more concerning. If you notice deep, horizontal lines across multiple nails, it could suggest a temporary interruption in nail growth due to:

  • Severe illness or fever (like COVID-19 or the flu)
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Zinc deficiency
  • Circulatory issues
  • Chemotherapy or other heavy medication use

3. Dark or Pigmented Stripes

Brown or black stripes should never be ignored. Although sometimes benign in people with darker skin tones, they can also be a sign of subungual melanoma, a rare but serious type of skin cancer that appears under the nail.

4. White Stripes or Spots

Often caused by minor trauma (like hitting your nail), but can also indicate low zinc levels or allergic reactions to nail products.

When Should You See a Doctor?

If your striped nails are accompanied by pain, color changes, swelling, or changes in nail shape, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional. Your nails may be giving you a heads-up before a bigger health issue surfaces.
