The Meaning of Red and Yellow Dots on Tires

When you look closely at a new tire, you might notice small red or yellow dots on the sidewall. These aren’t decorative—they actually serve an important purpose for proper tire installation and performance.

Red Dot:
The red dot indicates the tire’s high point of radial runout, which is the stiffest part of the tire. When mounting the tire on a wheel, it should generally be aligned with the low point of the wheel rim (often marked with a small dimple or colored dot). Proper alignment helps reduce vibrations and ensures a smoother ride.

Yellow Dot:
The yellow dot shows the tire’s lightest point. When mounting, it should be matched with the heaviest point of the wheel, usually where the valve stem is located. This helps with wheel balancing and can reduce the amount of weight needed to balance the tire.

Key Tip:
If a tire has both red and yellow dots, follow your tire manufacturer’s guidance. Usually, the red dot takes priority for performance-focused mounting.

By paying attention to these markings, you can ensure better ride quality, longer tire life, and safer handling.
